I frequently get the error message: “display driver stopped responding & has recovered”. Immediately after the error message, the screen freezes, goes off and comes back on again. It works fine after that.

You have not provided any details of your system software and hardware. Such error normally happens due to display driver issues. Please try these steps:
(A) Start the system in safe mode and uninstall the display driver software.
(B) Download the latest video driver compatible with the Windows version you have.
(C) Install the downloaded software.
(D) Restart the system.
(E) If there is any firmware available for the card, update it.
(F) Run a Windows Update.
(G) Update the BIOS of the system.
