Yes, you can directly download the Service Pack from the link http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=5842 and install it, it’s very easy. I don’t know in what reference your friend suggested you that your system may crash after service pack installation. This has been tested by Microsoft and many people have installed it. Just make sure you system is free from any malware and is a genuine copy.

I had to reinstall Windows XP on my computer but when I finished, I noticed that there was no sound. I checked the sound controller in the device manager and I saw a yellow exclamation mark with the error code 10. The device is a c-media ac97 BTW. I’ve tried updating the driver, uninstalling and reinstalling it but nothing seems to work. I’ve run out of ideas.
