Since last week, ‘automatic updates’ is disabled and the option to change it is grayed out. It’s a windows 7 machine and I am the only administrator.

Please try these steps:
Method 1:
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter to fix the issue. It makes sure that your computer is connected to the Internet, and checks to see whether your network adapter and Windows Update services are running correctly.

Method 2:
Run a System File Checker (SFC) scan on your computer and see if that fixes the issue.

SFC tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.
