I tried to uninstall a program the other day and as far as my recollection goes, I succeeded. But for some reason, I still see it in add or remove programs (I have xp) and it refuses to go away now. Why would that happen? Is there a way to get rid of it?

The program in question may not be uninstalled in proper way. Try to delete the program folder from the C:>Program files and then try to manually remove the name from the add remove program listing. You can also use 3rd party program uninstaller and registry cleaner from internet.

You can also try to delete it from registry. Beware that editing registry incorrectly may damage your system functionality so if you are not sure do not proceed. Always take a registry backup before editing.

In the Open window type regedit and press Enter
Navigate to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
The Add/Remove Programs list is built from the keys listed beneath the Uninstall folder.
Locate the key for the program that has been uninstalled, right click the key and click Delete
