Earlier I had to enter a password on waking up my Windows 7-based computer from sleep. But since the past few days I have noticed that I am not prompted for a password. Why is it so?

You should check this:
Just head into Power Options in Control Panel, then click the “Require a password on wakeup” on the left-hand side. Then click the “Change settings that are currently unavailable”. Then you can click the “require a password” radio button, and make sure to Save your changes.
