my client sends me excel excel files in .xlsx format. I searched on the internet and figured out that it was for 2007 and 2010. Mine unfortunately is 2003. I dont want to upgrade until i buy a new laptop this Christmas. Is there a work around to this?

I understand your concerns as there are many users who have the older version and have documents to be read in the newer version. No issues, you will have to download and install Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 and later File Formats. This will help you to read your .xslx format in Office 2003 without upgrading. I hope it sounds good to you.

(a) You must install all high priority updates from Microsoft Update (http://update.microsoft.com) before you download the Compatibility Pack.
(b) Since you are using Office 2003, Service Pack 3 (SP3) must be installed. To download SP3 for Office XP, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=85af7bfd-6f69-4289-8bd1-eb966bcdfb5e
(c) You can download the compatibility pack from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466
