You may get this error due to the following situations:

1) Word previously might have shut down improperly while the file was still open.
2) The document also might be locked for editing if the original version of the document is already open.
3) If the document is shared over a network and another user opened it

Accordingly try to delete if a temp file is created, close the document from another location etc.
