I downloaded a .3gp file on my computer, but I am unable to play it on Windows Media Player. I can’t figure out the reason for the problem. Please assist me.

You need the right codecs to play .3gp files. Out of many options, you can visit the link http://www.free-codecs.com/ to download the codecs and associate it will WMP. This will help you to play .3gp files.
