    On inserting a disc in the drive of my laptop, the error "Cannot locate the DVD-ROM. Please insert the correct DVD-ROM, select OK and restart application" is displayed. Earlier the DVD drive was working fine. I can't understand why this problem is occurring.

If the DVD was working on the same drive on this computer on the same user account, it is definitely not a case of incompatibility of the drive with the program. Follow these steps:
• Clean the disk with a cotton cloth.
• Hold the ‘Windows logo’ key down and press ‘r’ on the keyboard. This would open the Run box.
• Type ‘regedit’ in the box and click OK.
• When you get the registry editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Control\ Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
• In the right pane, right click ‘UpperFilters’ and delete it.
• In the right pane, right click ‘LowerFilters’ and delete it.
• Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer.

Note: Be very careful while modifying the registry. Modifying it incorrectly can cause system instability.

If the problem persists:

• Hold the ‘Windows logo’ key down and press ‘r’ on the keyboard. This would open the Run box.
• Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in the box and click OK.
• Locate the CD/DVD drive section and expand it.
• Right click the driver listed under it and select ‘Update driver software’.
• Follow the ‘update driver wizard’.
• If you get a message that the best driver software is already installed, right click the driver and select ‘Uninstall’ instead of ‘Update driver software’ and restart the computer.

If these steps don’t work, follow http://support.microsoft.com/kb/228985

If the CD drive still does not get detected, it indicates a hardware issue and you would need to get the drive repaired or replaced.
