The error messages indicate corruption in system files. If there is no program or data on the laptop that is really crucial, and you can locate either the ‘System Recovery Disc’ or a ‘Windows XP reinstallation CD’, you can simply perform a reinstallation to be able to use the laptop again.
If there are important files though, you can use the Windows XP CD to perform a repair installation of Windows XP. You can refer to http://www.windowsxp.windowsreinstall.com/sp2sp3installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm for screenshots to perform it.
If you do not see the option to boot from the disc when you start Windows, you would need to change the boot sequence in the BIOS. Basically, you want to make the CD-ROM drive the first boot device. You will find the steps to do so on http://www.windowsreinstall.com/articles/bios/
