I have a laptop that i received from the family of a friend who recently passed away. It is fairly new and has password protection on it and I dont know the password. Also, there is no option to boot from the dvd drive in the bios, so I cant just wipe the hd with a new copy of windows. I can set it to boot from usb. any ideas on how I can get into this machine or, barring that, load new software onto it?

You can probably bring it back to factory settings. The instructions on how to do it vary between makes and models.

I my opinion, some third-party software like Windows Login Recovery or free Ophcrack should be used to solve the lost password problem because that is one of the best methods to reset Windows password.
