My Windows XP-based laptop is restarting on its own. What is the real cause for this problem and how can I fix it.

The answer to a similar query as posted by you is here at http://www.askiyogi.com/windows/16655.html whose steps are reproduced below. Please follow all the steps mentioned in this link.

(A) Disconnect any peripheral device.
(B) Update all the device drivers.
(C) Run a security software scan on your system after updating it.
(D) Use the msconfig utility to disable startup programs.
(E) Uninstall any programs that you are not using any more.
(F) Run a Windows update.
(G) If you are unable to perform the above steps in normal mode, try to start the system in Safe mode and then perform the steps.
(H) Update the BIOS of the system.
(I) If your system supports full diagnostics please run it and check if any device needs attention.
