Please check the following:

(a) See if firewall is blocking any connection.
(b) Check the connections settings in Firefox for proxy or other entry.
(c) Delete cookies/temp files etc from Firefox.
(d) Try to run Firefox in safe mode and see if you still get the error
(e) Make sure the internet connection is working.
