On starting Mozilla Firefox 4 on my laptop, the browser keeps crashing. A colleague told me to open it in safe mode, and then it worked fine. But why does it not open in normal mode?

If the browser is working fine in safe mode, it means some extensions are causing issues and is not letting the browser work normally. You will have to identify the extension and then either disable it or reinstall it with the updated compatible version.
