Have you checked through other browser or application of the internet is working. One reason for Page cannot be displayed error is no active internet connection, so please check your modem, status on network connections and if your system is getting any valid IP address. The slow starting of Firefox may be due to extensions or themes. You can go through the steps in standard diagnostics page as mentioned here in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox
Check these regards internet connection:
(a) If firewall is blocking any connection.
(b) Check if the DNS configuration is valid.
(c) Check for modem lights and cable connection, if possible, restart the router/modem.
(d) If you are using Wireless, follow the steps here in http://www.askiyogi.com/connecting-computers-networking/3896.html given below
(A) Click on the wireless triangular icon in the system tray next to time and see if the window popup showing all the available networks, if yes, select your network and supply with credentials.
(B) If it does not show any networks, check for wireless switch present in the laptop, an associated utility will also be there, if not, install it from the manufacturers website. This utility will tell you if the system wireless is powered up.
(C) Click Start and in search box type Device manager… select device manager from search results above and the in the window that opens up, look for network adapters and under it see if the wireless card is installed properly, any yellow/red mark is an issue and needs to be resolved. Wireless drivers compatible with Win7 may have to be downloaded and installed. Check your system manufacturers website for this.
(D) If multiple wireless utility software is installed in the system, just keep one.
(E) Make sure the wireless signal strength is enough.
(F) Check for firewall connection if it is blocking any wireless connection.
