Reason
This behavior occurs when the figure follows a step and both steps and figures use the < n=1 > and < n+ > building blocks. It is because the auto numbering formats used by both steps and figures do not have a serial label.
Solution
The solution to the problem
Follow the instructions to fix the problem when figure takes the number of a step rather than the next figure number in Adobe FrameMaker 9:
Step 1-Select a step that is numbered 1.
Step 2-On the ‘Format’ menu, select ‘Paragraphs’, and then click on ‘Designer’.
Step 3-In the ‘Paragraph Designer’ dialog box, click on the ‘Numbering’ tab.
Step 4- Add a serial label for steps in the ‘Autonumber Format’ box , for example ‘S’, at the beginning of the building blocks, and then click on ‘Update All’.
Step 5-Select a step that is numbered 2 or above.
Step 6- Add the same serial label on the ‘Numbering’ tab, (in this example, ‘S’) in the ‘Autonumber Format’ box, and then click on ‘Update All’.
Step 7-Select the paragraph that labels the first figure.
Step 8-Now add a different serial label for figures, for example ‘F’, in the ‘Autonumber Format’ box, and then click on ‘Update All’.
Step 9-Select a paragraph that labels any figure after the first, add the same serial label (in this example, ‘F’) in the ‘Autonumber Format’ box, and then click on ‘Update All’.
Step 10-Exit from the ‘Paragraph Designer’ dialog box, and then save the changes.
