I want to put a password on my 1tb external hard drive so that my son does not tamper any of my official files while I am away. Does Windows 7 allow you to do that? Is it safe? (The data I'm referring to is of great importance. I just cannot lose it.) Thanks -Kevin

If you have Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise edition, you can use the Windows inbuilt Bitlocker to protect data on external drive. Try this:

1. Open Bitlocker Drive Encryption by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Security, and then clicking Bitlocker Drive Encryption.
2. Click Turn On BitLocker. This opens the BitLocker setup wizard. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Follow the instructions in the wizard.
Alternatively, you can use third party software’s available online to put a password on the external disk as per your requirements.
