I have an Epson Stylus Photo 1400 printer and I’m having problems with the print quality not matching the on screen image, surely not an uncommon problem. Any help would be appreciated.

As you have mentioned that the print quality is not as desired as you can see it on the screen. I believe it is on perception but still you will not get almost the same what you see on screen as this printer that you have is just a regular printer. A color laser will match the nearest. Still please try the following steps:

(a) Check the settings of the printer software, specially the settings related to RBG, DPI, grayscale, resolution etc.
(b) Make sure the color cartridge is full will all cyan, magenta etc.
(c) Try to open the photo in another software and try to print from there.
(d) Try some photo print software that gives you many options for tweaking.
(e) Clean the cartridge and the nozzle.
