An AirCard allows you to access wireless Internet service provided by communications companies like AT&T and Verizon. The download time is also very fast. This makes AirCards very valuable for traveling laptop users needing web access on the go. You can't, however, just plug an AirCard into your computer and expect it to bring up the Internet. Your computer won't recognize the AirCard's driver until you install the card's software. Try these:
(a) Check the output ports on your computer so you know what type of AirCard to get. Most AirCards have a standard USB connector that any computer should have. Some have a PC MCIA connection (with a long, thin, 24-pin port) which not all laptop computers have. Others are loaded into the computer.
(b) Subscribe to a wireless subscription service for the AirCard you purchase. This is very similar to a wireless phone subscription and should be by the same company that manufactures your AirCard. You should be able to purchase the subscription at the same place where you buy the AirCard.
(c) Connect or install the AirCard to your computer. Load the included CD-ROM into the computer's CD drive. Open the CD on your computer desktop to see the enclosed software programs for activating the AirCard on the computer.
(d) Open the installation program on the CD for "retrieving the driver" and follow the program's installation steps. This will make your computer recognize the AirCard's driver and activate the AirCard. It will now pick up approved wireless signals on your computer.
(e) Call your wireless provider to verify that your subscription has been activated. When you purchased the subscription, you should have been given a number or website to contact for activation using a subscription number, activation code or other form of verification.
(f) Open your Internet browser on your computer. If the AirCard is properly installed and your subscription is activated, you should be able to access the Internet via the wireless signal.
(g) Install the CD's software program for managing networks if you have multiple wireless transmitters you want to connect to, like a wireless router. Opening this program will show the available sources where you can select which signal to receive.
