You have not mentioned the model of the printer. Since when did this issue start? Please try the following steps:

(a) Check the color cartridge for cleaning and if required replace it.
(b) Check if option for grayscale printing is enabled.
(c) Check all the settings related to printer and reset it to defaults.
(d) Check the settings in the software application that you are using to send print command.

Recently purchased an HP Officejet 4500 Desktop printer/fax/scanner. I programmed the fax to auto answer/connect after 2 rings. It won't connect automatically, regardless of the number of rings.
