You have not mentioned the model of the printer and how you are connecting it to the system? Please check these steps:
(a) Make sure the printer is connected to the computer and powered on.
(b) If requited, try to swap the printer cable.
(c) Clear any error state in the printer console.
(d) Install the driver that is compatible with Windows 7. You can visit the manufacturer website to download the latest driver.
(e) First install the driver and then connect the printer.
(f) Try to change the port of the connection if it is USB. If you are connecting through wireless, make sure router is powered on.
(g) Try to print a test page from printer menu itself to make sure printer hardware is fine.
