I have bought a new laptop with Windows 7, which has a 500GB hard disk drive. But the total disk space that is shown by the operating system is lower than 500GB. Where has the remaining hard disk space gone?

If you are talking just about the actual size then its all about calculations. The capacity that is advertised (e.g. 500GB) is a decimal number. What you see in the PC is a binary number - it differs in such that 1000 bytes in decimal equals 1024 bytes in binary. So your binary GB's are only about 95% of your decimal GB's.
