If you had recently made any changes, please try a system restore. Also update the antivirus software and run a full system scan. If there is a firmware update for your drive, please update it, check it at http://support.wdc.com/ . Also you can try to perform some general USB troubleshooting steps as mentioned in the link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Tips-for-solving-problems-with-USB-devices#EGB :
(a) Update the USB Hub driver.
(b) Update the BIOS software.
(c) Run a Windows Update.
(d) Check in the manufacturers website if there is a firmware update available for the device.
(e) Try another USB port.
(f) Check if you have another USB cable.
