I'm using Vista Home Basic.I've been using an external WD hard drive for storage and it's been fine until today. All of a sudden it has disappeared. At microsoft I used the fix it tool and it says reinstalling the driver might fix - I say yes - Device driver comes up saying installed successfully - but the drive starts working continually until I unplug the usb or turn off. The same thing repeats again.

If you had recently made any changes, please try a system restore. Also update the antivirus software and run a full system scan. If there is a firmware update for your drive, please update it, check it at http://support.wdc.com/ . Also you can try to perform some general USB troubleshooting steps as mentioned in the link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Tips-for-solving-problems-with-USB-devices#EGB :

(a) Update the USB Hub driver.
(b) Update the BIOS software.
(c) Run a Windows Update.
(d) Check in the manufacturers website if there is a firmware update available for the device.
(e) Try another USB port.
(f) Check if you have another USB cable.
