I've been using a USB hub recently. I have only one dependable USB port (apart from where my DSL router plugs in), so I plug into that, and into a less dependable port for additional power. Sometimes it works fine. Sometimes the computer can't detect it, and sometimes the computer makes a high-pitched hum when I plug in the hub's power cable to the second USB port.

It seems the issue can be with the hub hardware. If you have another system, try to use this hub there and see if the issue reoccurs, if not, then follow the steps below as mentioned in the link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Tips-for-solving-problems-with-USB-devices#EGB else replace the hub.

(a) Update the USB Hub driver.
(b) Update the BIOS software.
(c) Run a Windows Update.
(d) Check in the manufacturers website if there is a firmware update available for the device.
(e) Try another USB port.
(f) Check if you have another USB cable.
