There are some settings that needs to be done so that you can use Outlook for gmail. Use these steps in sequence:
(1) Enable IMAP in Gmail as:
a. Sign in to Gmail.
b. Click the gear icon in the upper-right and select Gmail settings at the top of any Gmail page.
c. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
d. Select Enable IMAP.
e. Configure your IMAP client and click Save Changes.
(2) Open Outlook Express.
a.Click the Tools menu, and select Accounts...
b.Click Add, and then click Mail...
c.Enter your name in the 'Display name' field, and click Next.
d.Enter your full email address (firstname.lastname@example.org) in the 'Email address' field, and click Next. If you are a Google Apps user, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com.'
e.For 'My incoming mail server is a ______ server', please select IMAP in the drop-down menu.
Enter 'imap.gmail.com' in the 'Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server' field. Enter 'smtp.gmail.com' in the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP) server' field.
f. Click Next.
g. Enter your full email address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com') in the 'Account name' field. Enter your password in the 'Password' field, and click Next.
h. Click Finish.
i. Highlight imap.gmail.com under Account, and click Properties.
j. Click the Advanced tab.
k. Under Outgoing Mail (SMTP), check the box next to 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL).'
l. Enter '465' in the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP)' field.
m. Under Incoming mail (IMAP), check the box next to 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)'. The port will change to '993'.
n. Click the Servers tab, and check the box next to 'My server requires authentication.
o. Click OK.
Now you are ready to send and receive email from Outlook express using your gmail account.

Gmail is one of the few free email providers that lets you set up a POP account so that you can read and reply to messages offline, without being connected to the Internet. Read on to learn how you set up your POP3 Gmail account in Outlook Express. Launch Outlook Express. Click on "Tools" and then "Accounts." In the "Internet Accounts" box, click on "Add" and then "Mail." Enter the display name for your account. Click "Next." Enter the Email Address for your Gmail account. Click "Next." Enter the following information: Incoming Mail: pop.gmail.com Outgoing Mail: smtp.gmail.com Click "Next." In Account Name, enter your full Gmail email address followed by the password for your account. Click "Next." Click on "Finish." Now, you need to specify the Gmail server settings. Highlight the new Email account you have just created and click on "Properties." Click on the "Servers" tab. Under "Outgoing Mail Server," check the box that says "My Server Requires Authentication." Click on the "Advanced" tab. Check both boxes that say "This Server Requires a Secure SSL Connection." Enter the following information: Outgoing Mail: 465 Incoming Mail: 995 Click "OK" and "Exit." You should now be able to send and receive Gmail emails in Outlook Express. Hope this helps. Cheers!
