On opening Mozilla Thunderbird, there is an error message stating that the folder inbox is full, and can't hold any more messages. To make room for messages, delete any old or unwanted mail and compact the folder. But there are not many e-mails in the inbox, so why is the program showing the inbox as full. My computer has Windows 7.

Your inbox may be having less emails but its possible that you have not compacted inbox for a long time, there may be space issues. Compacting is something that needs to be done regularly in any email program. I recommend weekly, but many of us do it daily. When done often enough, it can be an extremely fast process. Not doing so can lead to problems like those you are experiencing.

The easiest way to compact is to let Thunderbird do it automatically. If you are running Thunderbird 3.1.14 or an earlier version check the checkbox for "Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network & Disk Space -> Disk Space -> Compact folder when it will save over 100 kB" and then press the OK button. If you are running a more recent version Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network & Disk Space -> "Compact folders when it will save over X MB" is used instead, and its automatically enabled. "X" defaults to 20MB in Thunderbird 5.0.
