On opening the default registry editor in Windows XP, I do not get any response. What can be done to open the registry editor?

Normally, To open Registry Editor, click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK. If there is no response, you can start the computer in safe mode and then try to open editor again.
Note: Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on your computer.

I am wanting to sell a hard drive that once had potentially sensitive data on it. I formatted the disk, re-installed the original OS and then copied over non-sensitive data (i.e. MP3 music files) until it was full. Is there any possible way to retrieve the original sensitive data?
